The Wheatgrass Book

Excerpts from The Wheatgrass Book by Ann Wigmore

WHEATGRASS JUICE…

Increases red blood-cell count and lowers blood pressure. It cleanses the blood, organs and gastrointestinal tract of debris. Wheatgrass also stimulates metabolism and the body’s enzyme systems by enriching the blood. It also aids in reducing blood pressure by dilating the blood pathways throughout the body.

Stimulates the thyroid gland, correcting obesity, indigestion, and a host of other complaints.

Restores alkalinity to the blood. The juice’s abundance of alkaline minerals helps reduce over-acidity in the blood. It can be used to relieve many internal pains, and has been used successfully to treat peptic ulcers, ulcerative colitis, constipation, diarrhea, and other complaints of the gastrointestinal tract.

Is a powerful detoxifier, and liver and blood protector. The enzymes and amino acids found in wheatgrass can protect us from carcinogens like no other food or medicine. It strengthens our cells, detoxifies the liver and bloodstream, and chemically neutralizes environmental pollutants.

Fights tumors and neutralizes toxins. Recent studies show that wheatgrass juice has a powerful ability to fight tumors without the usual toxicity of drugs that also inhibit cell-destroying agents. The many active compounds found in grass juice cleanse the blood and neutralize and digest toxins in our cells.

Contains beneficial enzymes. Whether you have a cut finger you want to heal or you desire to lose five pounds…enzymes must do the actual work. The life and abilities of the enzymes found naturally in our bodies can be extended if we help them from the outside by adding exogenous enzymes, like the ones found in wheatgrass juice. Don’t cook it. We can only get the benefits of the many enzymes found in grass by eating it uncooked. Cooking destroys 100 percent of the enzymes in food.

Has remarkable similarity to our own blood. The second important nutritional aspect of chlorophyll is its remarkable similarity to hemoglobin, the compound that carries oxygen in the blood. Dr. Yoshihide Hagiwara, president of the Hagiwara Institute of Health in Japan, is a leading advocate for the use of grass as food and medicine. He reasons that since chlorophyll is soluble in fat particles, and fat particles are absorbed directly into the blood via the lymphatic system, that chlorophyll can also be absorbed in this way. In other words, when the “blood” of plants is absorbed in humans it is transformed into human blood, which transports nutrients to every cell of the body.

When used as a rectal implant, reverses damage from inside the lower bowel. An implant is a small amount of juice held in the lower bowel for about 20 minutes. In the case of illness, wheatgrass implants stimulate a rapid cleansing of the lower bowel and draw out accumulations of debris.

Externally applied to the skin can help eliminate itching almost immediately.

Will soothe sunburned skin and act as a disinfectant. Rubbed into the scalp before a shampoo, it will help mend damaged hair and alleviate itchy, scaly, scalp conditions.

Is soothing and healing for cuts, burns, scrapes, rashes, poison ivy, athlete’s foot, insect bites, boils, sores, open ulcers, tumors, and so on. Use as a poultice and replace every two to four hours.

Works as a sleep aide. Merely place a tray of living wheatgrass near the head of your bed. It will enhance the oxygen in the air and generate healthful negative ions to help you sleep more soundly.

Enhances your bath. Add some to your bath water and settle in for a nice, long soak.

Sweetens the breath and firms up and tightens gums. Just gargle with the juice.

Neutralizes toxic substances like cadmium, nicotine, strontium, mercury, and polyvinyl chloride.

Offers the benefits of a liquid oxygen transfusion since the juice contains liquid oxygen. Oxygen is vital to many body processes: it stimulates digestion (the oxidation of food), promotes clearer thinking (the brain utilizes 25% of the body’s oxygen supply), and protects the blood against anaerobic bacteria. Cancer cells cannot exist in the presence of oxygen.

Turns gray hair to its natural color again and greatly increases energy levels when wheatgrass is consumed daily.

Is a beauty treatment that slows down the aging process when the juice is consumed. Wheatgrass will cleanse your blood and help rejuvenate aging cells, slowing the aging process way down, making you feel more alive right away. It will help tighten loose and sagging skin.

Lessens the effects of radiation. One enzyme found in wheatgrass, SOD, lessens the effects of radiation and acts as an anti-inflammatory compound that may prevent cellular damage following heart attacks or exposure to irritants.

Restores fertility and promotes youthfulness.

Can double your red blood cell count just by soaking in it. Renowned nutritionist Dr. Bernard Jensen found that no other blood builders are superior to green juices and wheatgrass. In his book Health Magic Through Chlorophyll from Living Plant Life he mentions several cases where he was able to double the red blood cell count in a matter of days merely by having patients soak in a chlorophyll-water bath. Blood building results occur even more rapidly when patients drink green juices and wheatgrass regularly.

Groin Pain In Sport

Athletes frequently suffer from groin pain. This can have a profoundly negative effect on physical performance, mental attitude and the will to win – but it can be cured.

Abductor Muscles

Abductor Muscles

Usually labelled osteitis pubis or “OP”, the pain most often originates from inflammation of the insertion of the large adductor muscles into the pubic bone deep in the groin – so-called adductor tendonitis. These muscles are located on the inside of the thigh and are responsible for pulling the leg in towards the midline. (See figure) Sometimes X-ray examination can show changes to this attachment area, but there is no consensus regarding their significance. Pain can occur while exercising or even at rest and the affected area may be very tender when pressed.

One of the least understood injuries in sports medicine, OP creates heartsink for doctors, physiotherapists, trainers and other sports-related health professionals. Why? Because they know there is little can be done about it other than surgery which doesn’t always work and that the athlete could be out of action for some time.

All manner of treatments are used by trainers, physiotherapists, etc. – ice, heat, rest, exercise, massage, anti-inflammatory medication – oral and topical. Results are usually disappointing and the condition often becomes chronic.

Recently I saw a 40 year old jockey who had suffered groin pain since age 10. The pain was so bad his quality of life was virtually ruined. Surgeons even explored inside his scrotum as they thought the pain may be coming from his testicle, but everything was normal.

My examination revealed marked limitation of leg movement and exquisite tenderness over the insertion of his adductor muscles. A classic case of OP!

I massaged in a little Superbalm over the tender area. Ten minutes later he had full movement of his leg and walked without pain for the first time in 30 years. At follow up a month later, he remained pain-free.

Hard to believe, I know, but you have my word for it…and this patient was only one of many I have treated over the years who also recovered from OP using wheatgrass. So far, I have not had a treatment failure.

How does it work? Wheatgrass can act as a powerful anti-inflammatory. This may have something to do with pain relief, but when it works so quickly as in this case, the cause of OP (generally regarded as disordered musculo-skeletal mechanics) needs to be reviewed. It can hardly be due solely to mechanical causes. One must therefore invoke another mechanism.

My theory, based on thousands of clinical observations and considerable research over 15 years, suggests there may be an autoimmune component to the pain of OP. When an individual is under sustained physical and mental pressure, the body’s immune system can become compromised. The immune system then attacks normal tissue such as tendon attachments in OP and plantar fasciitis. Wheatgrass, being a potent immunomodulator, is able to eliminate part or all of this component.

This may or may not be so, but I think I’m on the right track simply because wheatgrass works for OP.

Wheatgrass: Some More Questions Answered

Reputation of Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass has developed a growing reputation in medical over the last 50 years. This built upon the groundwork of wheatgrass supporters like Ann Wigmore in the 1940s. As more became known of its nutritional content, it became known as a ‘superfood’. Wheatgrass juice is easily digested and provides nourishment, cleansing and healing.

Many people take wheatgrass on a daily basis either as juice or powder. It is considered that foods with a high alkaline content are good for most people. Wheatgrass with its high chlorophyll content and is more alkaline than spinach, celery or bananas.

Here are 4 reasons to take wheatgrass:-

Wheatgrass is good for the blood

It is often called green blood. This is because there are similarities in the structure of the chlorophyll molecule in wheatgrass and the haemoglobin molecule in blood. The main difference is that chlorophyll contains magnesium and haemoglobin contains ferrum (iron)

The chlorophyll in wheatgrass can help the blood in a number of ways. It is a good health food for those suffering with anaemia because it helps to build red blood cells quickly. It helps to balance blood pressure and destroys certain toxins in the blood.

Wheatgrass cleans our bodies

Wheatgrass is high in antioxidants, it contains vitamins B, C, E and carotene, so is good for getting rid of those free radicals, the cancer causing agents. Drinking 100 grams of wheatgrass juice is the same as eating 2 kilos of vegetables. What is does for the cleaning the blood, it does for our organs and digestive system.

Wheatgrass is a complete food

Wheatgrass is a complete natural food it is high in energy and rich in vitamins. There are 13 kinds of vitamins, 10 kinds of minerals, 17 amino acids and 100 enzymes including abscicic acid which helps to fight cancer.

Wheatgrass juice is a complete protein and contains, amongst others, the following amino acids: arginine, serine, absenisic, lysine, aspartic acid, glycine, alanine, methionine, leucine, tryptophane, phenylalanine, and valine.

Wheatgrass brings healing to our bodies

Wheatgrass is good for those suffering with nutrition imbalance. It speeds up the healing process in injured cells. It has anti inflammation properties and it helps eliminate toxic cells from our bodies. It is good for diabetic patients internally and externally as a wheatgrass poultice can help clear up ulcers.

Wheatgrass helps strengthen our immune systems, cleanse and bodies and keep us healthy. It also contains several active enzymes which play a major role in breaking down fats, undertaking biological functions and assist hugely in weight loss.

Wheatgrass include it in your daily diet

Wheatgrass is recognised and certified by a number of countries in South East Asia like Malaysia, Indonesia and Japan.
Wheatgrass is very beneficial to the body and there is a very strong case for making it a part of our daily diet. You can grow your own and press it yourself, or you can purchase it as a supplement or in powder form. So it is worth trying it.

How long have we been eating wheatgrass?

Who would think that something as simple as grass could have such a positive impact on our health? You may think that grass is food for cows and sheep. They eat the grass and we eat them! Please accept my apologies all you vegetarians reading this art icle.

Well why not go straight to where product is manufactured rather than waiting for it to be processed and converted by a middle man (or, cow)? OK, this is not a crusade for everybody to start eating their lawns, or clear out the plants on the town’s vacant lots – although there could be a good argument for doing so. The story is told of Ann Wigmore who, in the 1940s, healed herself of cancer from the weeds she found in vacant lots around Boston.

We are here talking about wheatgrass. A simple food that is big on claims and substance. Ann Wigmore went on to write many books on the subject and started a healing institute. She lived until she was 84 years old. The cancer never returned, but she died in a fire when the old building that housed her institute went up in flames.

Wheatgrass has a lo ng history. Tradition has it that the Essenes, the Jewish group who lived at the time of Jesus, would have had wheat seeds and wheat seed sprouts as part of their diet. They believed that a good diet and a positive attitude was the answer to perfect health. Which is still good advice today.

Modern evidence suggests that much of the sickness that is around today is due to our poor diets. Food is either processed too much, or cooked to death – often destroying the life-giving enzymes, vitamins and minerals on the way.

Wheatgrass is full of enzymes, vitamins, minerals and amino acids. It is an excellent source of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, sulphur, cobalt, and zinc.

Supporters also claim, as if the above list of ingredients is not enough, that there is a more important ingredient in wheatgrass. That ingredient is chlorophyll. This is the life force for our planet’s plant kingdom. Chlorophyll is liquid energy from the sun. It is practically identical to human blood except that magnesium is in its nucleus instead of iron.

During the 1940s there was much research done on the health benefits of chlorophyll. There are over 40 articles from that time, written up in various medical journals. The positive effects of chlorophyll for our health are too numerous to list here. But here are a few, wheatgrass is an effective tonic for skin allergies, kidney stones, dental infections and acne. It is also claimed that scar tissue in lungs caused by smoking or drugs can be healed over time.

In recent years more research work has been by Japanese pharmacist, Yoshihide Hagiwar, who found that barley grass had restorative healing powers. And of course many people are finding out for themselves, that this natural product, wheatgrass, has remarkable health benefits. Why not try it for yourself?

Grow Wheatgrass Indoors

You can buy wheat seeds, (or berries as they are often known) at your local heath foods store, or order them online. Amazon stock wheatgrass growing kits which inlude seeds, a how-to book and a growing medium (or flat block/tray). This makes it easy to grow wheatgrass indoors.

You will need a juicer that is suitable for wheatgrass and other leafy vegetables. Your regular juicer that pulps up carrots, beetroot, and fruit is not suitable for wheatgrass juicing. Wheatgrass needs to be pressed or squeezed to get the juice just right. There are electric juicers available but a manual juicer is ideal. The kind that reminds you of the mincers that a 1950/60s home would have, except of course, they are more attractively designed these days and made from modern materials. A hand juicer costs around $40.

Wheat seeds will sprout and grow in a shallow dish of water. But it is useful to remember that if you have a good growing medium, you will have good quality wheatgrass. Wheatgrass is able to absorb most of the nutrients we need from the soil. So make sure that you have a good organic soil. You can use the topsoil from your garden and if you have a good compost, use that too. Those of us who live near a garden centre can buy a good bag of potting compost that will last for ages. You may also be able to buy the individual items there if you don’t buy a kit.

1.    Many home-growers soak the seeds in water for 24 hours.

(some will wait until the seeds start to sprout before going to steps two and three)

2.    Place about an inch (2.4 cms) of soil across the bottom of the seed tray

3.    You can then spread out the seeds in the growing tray so that the seeds cover the service of the soil.

4.    Cover the seeds with a light layer of soil

5.    Place a cover on the tray for two or three days, keep the soil moist and the tray in a warm place (this will force the sprouting)

6.    When the shoots are about an inch (2.4 cms) – uncover the tray and place outside in the sunshine or on a sunny window sill

7.    The grass will then green up and grow to about 8 – 10 inches (about 20 cms) in 7 – 10 days depending on conditions

8.    Cut the grass as near to the soil as possible (you can keep it for up to seven days unwashed) best to use immediately.

9.    Squeeze or press the grass

10.   Drink the green nectar neat, or mix with your favourite juice.

It is important once you start growing your own, to operate a regular system for a continuous supply. You will gradually find by trial and error how much you need to grow and which is the best size seed tray.

If your enthusiasm for this home grown venture starts to wane, remember the health benefits of wheatgrass juice. It is a natural source of vitamins and minerals and is an excellent source of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, sulphur, cobalt, and zinc. So it is a great way to get most of the nutrients your body needs and is so easy to digest.

Get your children involved in the growing process. You may find that getting them to drink this sweet grassy drink is a whole lot easier than getting them to eat their ‘greens’.

The Health Benefits of Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass is great food product. It is a natural source of vitamins and minerals and is an excellent source of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, sulphur, cobalt, and zinc.

Wheatgrass is thought to have a higher vitamin B12 content than other vegetables. This is an essential nutrient, though the vitamin is not contained within the wheatgrass but is a by-product of the micro-organisms living on it. Vitamin B12 is absent from many other leafy green vegetables

Supporters claim that wheatgrass is not only a good source of nutrients, but also provides antioxidant protection, supports the immune system, reduces cholesterol and promotes detoxification.

Wheatgrass is a healthy super food that has been used traditionally in cultures around the world. It is not, however, a substitute for eating a variety of organic fruits and vegetables. So is best used as part of a healthy diet.

Wheatgrass is a leafy green plant and is different altogether from the grain and refined grain products that people often develop allergies to. It is good for those on a gluten free diet

Wheatgrass is an effective tonic, here are some of its healing qualities, it is beneficial for:-

  • skin allergies
  • greying or hair loss
  • weakness
  • kidney stones
  • weak eyesight
  • pyorrhoea
  • dental infections
  • fatigue, and
  • acne (along with an improved diet)

As if that is not enough, there is a body of opinion that says it is good for prostate cancer. So it may be worth adding it to your list of remedies for prostate health because it is so beneficial in many other ways.

Wheatgrass juice is one of the best sources of chlorophyll available. Like all green plants that contain chlorophyll, it is high in oxygen.  The brain and all body tissues function at an optimal level in a highly-oxygenated environment.

Chlorophyll is anti-bacterial and can be used inside and outside the body to heal and cleanse. Wheatgrass can also be digested very quickly which means that it uses up very little energy.

Why not try the health benefits of wheatgrass for yourself?

    What Is Wheatgrass?

Wheatgrass has been known for many years for it’s health benefits, and those who are serious about their diets can take it in a juice, tablet or powder form. The popularity of wheatgrass is attributed to one of its early proponents, Charles Schnabel, who in the 1930s he made some interesting claims. His well documented assertion that, “15 pounds of wheatgrass is equivalent to 350 pounds of the choicest vegetables”, will probably have to go down these days as an unsubstantiated claim. Well you can’t doubt his enthusiasm, and the image that this statement conjures up is worth keeping his quotation to hand.

There will always be those who challenge the perceived truths of the healthy eating fans. The organic food industry can testify to that. What is not in doubt is that wheatgrass has a high count when in comes to amino acids, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll and fiber. So whatever else you believe, wheatgrass ticks the boxes as a healthy food, and it is easy to take and digest. Wheatgrass compliments any diet and is especially good for anyone on a low carbohydrate diet- since it is naturally high in protein and low in carbohydrates. The best current advice is to take 5 portions of fruit and vegetables everyday, and wheatgrass can certainly help with this.

Some of the health benefits ascribed to wheatgrass are; helping to prevent heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Also wheatgrass is thought to aid digestion and cleanse the liver and alleviate acne. Some of this evidence may be circumstantial, but these claims are often made by people who have tried this for themselves after often having tried everything else.

Wheatgrass is also so easy to grow indoors at home. How many fruits and vegetables can you say that for. It doesn’t matter if you live in a small apartment, as long as you have a window sill, you are in business. Wheatgrass likes a sunny spot and regular watering. You can grow it in pots or flat blocks and it’s ready from seed in a week to ten days. Keep a succession of pots and just trim it off at its base when you need it. Drink about two ounces each day just before a meal, or mix it with your favorite juice, as part of a healthy diet. Sounds good!
